Notes & Reviews:
Arthaus Musik presents Johann Strauss’s rarely recorded, unique Simplicius in a 2000 performance staged at Zurich Opera, conducted by Franz Welser-Möst. British director David Pountney lets the entertaining tale unfold accompanied by the many spectacular effects for which he has become internationally famous. The last stage work for which Strauss conducted the premiere, he described the work as “generally speaking much more cheerful than Der Zigeunerbaron.” The felicitous orchestration, languorous melodies and endless inventiveness ensure over two hours of listening pleasure.
