Verdi: Requiem Mass / Krassimira Stoyanova, Marina Prudenskaja, Saimir Pirgu, Orlin Anastassov. Mariss Jansons. Bavarian RSO [DVD]

Notes & Reviews:

Verdi’s “Messa da Requiem” is in itself a work of superlatives: a towering structure of blazing brass, mighty choral masses and tour-de- force passages for four soloists... a work of deepest and most heartfelt intimacy... a mass for the dead without any mawkish undertones... quite possibly the foremost achievement in 19th c. liturgical music. For this performance, eminent conductor Mariss Jansons led the Bavarian Radio Chorus and Symphony Orchestra. While Bulgarian soprano Krassimira Stoyanova has been closely associated with the Wiener Staatsoper for several years now, mezzo-soprano Marina Prudenskaya has been steadily building her international career. Albanian-born tenor Saimir Pirgu was chosen by Claudio Abbado at age of 22 to sing Ferrando in “Cosi` fan tutte.” Bulgarian bass Orlin Anastassov, meanwhile, has established himself as a superb Verdi singer. “Whoever was lucky enough to experience this performance live will find it hard to get his feet back on the ground.” (Kurier) “Mariss Jansons delivers a fabulously successful Verdi ‘Requiem’.” (Suddeutsche Zeitung)

American Record Guide, March/April 2015
This is a thoroughly enjoyable and satisfying performance of the Requiem. Tempos are just right, and the well-balanced chorus sings with fervor and appealing tone. The conductor is always supportive, calm, or assertive by turns. The solo quartet is good, especially on top and bottom. Anastassov's nicely modulated bass is a pleasure to hear, and Stoyanova is lovely in tone, flowing and steady. Her pianissimo high B-flat is perfect, and she has fine breath control. Tenor Pirgu is sometimes graceless in the ensembles. I have some reservations about the recorded sound, which is light on bottom.
