Notes & Reviews:

Released for the first time on Blu-ray Disc, this rehearsal and the performances pay tribute to the legendary Herbert von Karajan. The recording of Beethoven's 5th from the mid-sixties offers insights into his role not only as a leading conductor but also as a pioneer in new media and filming techniques. Karajan, responsible for the thrilling visual direction, chose as director the famed Henri-Georges Clouzot ("Quai des Orfèvres" and "Wages of Fear"). The rousing interpretation of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony with the Berlin Philharmonic was recorded live on new Year's Eve, 1977 in Berlin.
