Notes & Reviews:

This unique concert was recorded 16 April 1998 as the Berlin Philharmonic performed at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Berlin. The program, featuring Beethoven, Liszt and Wagner, also offered a rare gem: Robert Schumann's Concert Piece for four horns, this recording being the only DVD currently on the market to offer this work. Soloists include Dale Clavenger, Stefan Dohr, Ignacio García and Georg Schreckenberger. The Staatsoper was the first Royal Court Opera ever to be constructed outside of a royal palace; today it ranks among the most outstanding of Berlin's cultural beacons.

"One of my best"-Schumann, 1849
There are at least 20 recordings of the Schumann Konzertstuck for 4 Horns and Orchestra currently listed. Several of them are exceptional. Still for us the Tennstedt/BPO version (EMI) from 1979 has always occupied a special niche. Now for those craving a video version, your prayers are answered with this superb performance, taped before an audience in 1998. Maestro Barenboim and the members of the BPO provide razor sharp, beautifully supple accompaniment for this virtuoso horn quartet. One of the players, Dale Clevenger worked with Maestro Barenboim in Chicago where together they recorded the piece in 1978 for DGG. As for the rest of the program, there is a great deal to admire here. The Beethoven is extroverted, refined and meticulously balanced. The Liszt is methodically gauged, organically building to an explosive finale. The Wagner has a requisite sense of propulsion and weight. Throughout, the sound pickup is dynamic and resonant, taking full measure of the wonderful acoustics of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin. The video direction and editing are above reproach. A winner in every regard, most notably because of the Schumann.
