A co-production with Perm State Opera and Teatro Real, Madrid, Teodor Currentzis and his orchestra and choir, MusicAeterna, team up with renowned American director Peter Sellars for a spectacular performance of Henry Purcell's unfinished "dramatic opera" The Indian Queen, giving it a new and stunning reworking. To the original 50 minutes of music, libretto and sung tests, Sellars has interwoven different secular and sacred works by Purcell, spoken texts from Rosario Aguilar's novel The Lost Chronicles of Terra Firma, and added striking set designs from Chicano graffiti artist Gronk and contemporary choreography by Christopher Williams. The result is a spectacular convergence of music, theater, dance, literature and visual art which explores the meeting of the Old World (Spain) and New World (Mayan Indians) - retelling history recorded by men through the eyes of a woman, a theme also explored in the interlaced texts of Aguilar's novel.
