Notes & Reviews:
Gluck's wonderful but neglected 1774 opera Iphigénie en Tauride, inspired by the Greek legend, is treated with forceful and convincing simplicity in Klaus Guth's revolutionary production staged at the Zurich Opera House.
Christoph Willibald Gluck's brilliant but often forgotten 1774 opera Iphigenie en Tauride is performed with austereness in this 2001 production at the Zurich Opera House. Stage director Klaus Guth underlines this psychological drama's stressed ambiance of trauma and fear by his use of enormous masks and enclosed spaces. The leading vocalists featured on this recording are mezzosoprano Juliette Galstian, baritone Rodney Gilfry, and the late Deon van der Walt. Under the baton of William Christie, The Orchestra "La Scintilla" of the Zurich Opera House Chorus, Ballet School and Supernumerary Association of the Zurich Opera House performs Gluck's score with transparency and technical finesse.Notes & Reviews:
