Notes & Reviews:

The term 'Jugendstil' is derived from 'Die Jugend' (Youth), the title of a magazine published in Munich in 1896. This artistic style, which reached its full flowering around 1900, was a means of expression that was characteristic of its time, with strong romantic traits and much opposed to the imitative style of historicism. The art, literature and music of this style followed a tendency toward the exotic, an escape from everyday life into decadent luxury, the morbidity of resignation and a bold variety of styles within the context of the composition. This CD presents a small selection of vocal pieces in just this style.
