Notes & Reviews:
"The performance is stunning. Vivaldi augments the usual strings and winds with horns and trumpets, and Curtis leads a rich reading, filled with more drama than he normally ekes out of both players and singers (his Rodelinda lacked drama). Vito Priante is a Motezuma worth fearing, his big bass tone fully able to get around coloratura--and his angry exclamations demand the attention The most glorious singing/acting, however, is by yet another mezzo (all of their voices are distinguishable from one-another, happily), Maite Beaumont, who delivers Fernando's music with spitfire diction and accuracy, portraying this tough character vividly. In short, only half of this opera may be by Vivaldi, but all of it is a joy to listen to." -Classics Today

... the exotic story concerns the Spanish conquest of Mexico and the defeat of its ruler Montezuma by the conquistador Fernando Cortez. Curtis has assembled a vocally accomplished cast. Montezuma, a bass role, is sung with resonant authority by Vito Priante while that of Mitrena, his wife, is projected with feminine charm by Marijana Mijanovic... The instrumentalists of Il Complesso Barocco are on excellent form...
Alan Curtis directs an assured and stylish performance, thoroughly convincing in its dramatic approach. The youngish cast give strong vocal accounts of themselves, with Maite Beaumont's hard-hearted Fernando standing out, and Inga Kalna, virtuosic as the Mexican general Asprano, also catching the ear. ...for sheer quality of music and performance it gives nothing but pleasure.
