Album Summary
Conductors Ensemble ComposersNotes & Reviews:
Although best-known for its comprehensive folk and traditional music catalog, the Gega label often releases collections of contemporary classical composers. These works are prime examples of different trends and styles in Bulgarian music. The Kyurkchiiski bears more than a passing resemblance to Kodaly's 'Peacock Variations.' The Kandov, Pironkoff and Djourov works are full of mystery, fascinating harmonic touches and orchestral effects only East Europeans can do so well, and the Tanev, with its motor rhythms and dramatic outbursts, is a modern counterpart to Mossolov's classic 'Iron Foundry.'
