Notes & Reviews:

The Spanish music included on this CD is taken from three manuscripts, two of which are found in the Biblioteca de Cartalunya in Barcelona, and the third in the Archive of the Santa Maria Church in Vilanova I la Geltru. These collections of instrumental dances and diversions are derived from disparate sources. The use of the word Alemanda in the titles of Spanish sources if often used to describe a German origin for the melody. The Spanish Sarabanda (lively and fast) is quite different than the French Sarabande (solemn and slow). The quick type of Sarabanda was introduced both in England and Spain in the 17th century. The English music presented here, on the other hand, is from a famous collection published in London in 1706, The Division Flute, originally composed for recorder and basso continuo. A 'division on a ground' is actually a theme and continuous variations (divisions( upon a repetitive bass line (ground). This was a widely-used form in England. The group, Rubato Appassionato, was founded in 2000 at the Royal Conservatory in the Hague. The ensemble devotes itself to Baroque music, and have received acclaim for the authentic and scholarly approach to the music they perform.
