Notes & Reviews:

The late, great Dennis Brain played principal horn for both the Philharmonia and the Royal Philharmonic when these recordings were made. This was a time when the artistic directors of the orchestras, Walter Legge (with the Philharmonia) and Sir Thomas Beechman (with the Royal Philharmonic) ruled the operations with fierce authority, unlike today, when many orchestras are self-managed. In those days, the players took advantage of being able to choose what they did in their free time, which often meant working for "rival" orchestras. Hence, Brain could be a principal in two orchestras. This release, following earlier discs featuring Brain's solo performances, is an obvious labor of love by the producers, including Satoru Aihara. As the notes say, "there are no long horn solos (in these recordings) but the magnificent and warm Brain sound when heard has an unforgettable beauty."
