Notes & Reviews:

From the titles of several of the movements of the 'Morceaux de Salon (Nocturne, Baracolle, Mazurka, etc)', it is clear that in this early stage in his life Rachmaninov was still very much under the influence of Chopin. These miniatures tend to speak in a language of fifty years earlier, with remarkably few of the identifying features which would soon become elements of Rachmaninov's adult voice. By the time he completed his 'Sonata in d-minor' in 1907, his unique "musical fingerprints" were very much in evidence. With first prize at the 2005 Ettore Pozzoli International Piano Competition and Gold Medal at the 2003 Royal Overseas League Music Competition, Scottish pianist Martin Cousin joins the ranks of such illustrious predecessors as Maurizio Pollini, Geoffrey Parsons, Jacqueline Du Pre and John Lill. A graduate of the Royal College of Music, he has performed in recitals, festival and solo engagements all over the world.
