Album Remarks & Appraisals:

This CD is the second of a series of seven traditional Zen 'shakuhachi' recordings released on the Tall Poppies label. Volumes 2 through 7, a total of over six hours of music, were all recorded in two consecutive afternoons. This is not such an extraordinary feat when the nature of the sacred Zen pieces are considered. The pieces on this recording are classical 'honkyoku', the "original pieces" of the Zen Buddhist Priests of Nothingness. The works function primarily as spiritual practice, an activity which transcends the concept of right and wrong. In other words, when performed as meditation, there are no mistakes. In 1980, Riley Lee, born to a Chinese father and Caucasian mother, became the first non-Japanese to attain the rank of 'dai shihan' (grand master) in the 'shakuhachi' tradition. He has recorded over 30 discs internationally.
