Notes & Reviews:

2006 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Dmitri Shostakovich, and during the Spring of 2006, Universal Classics has been releasing five exceptional budget boxed sets which draw on recordings from the Decca, Philips and Deutsche Grammophon catalog, covering the majority of Shostakovich's music. The June releases sees the final three boxed sets. The present set includes the complete piano music and chamber works performed by pianist Vladimir Ashkenazy, as well as Lynn Harrell, the Beaux Arts Trio, Olli Mustonen and the Fitzwilliam String Quartet. The Penguin Guide wrote: "Lynn Harrell and Vladimir Ashkenazy give a convincing account of the Cello Sonata... Their brisk tempo and their freedom from affectation is refreshing."
