Jenny Douglass (Viola)
Joshua Gordon (Cello)
Notes & Reviews:
Roger Sessions' influence as a teacher of American composers compares favorably with that of Schoenberg, Hindemith, and Boulanger. In his works he evolved a remarkably compact polyphonic idiom, dissonant yet remarkably lyrical. He won every major award, including a Pulitzer Prize. This CD features a first recording of his 'Quintet for Strings' (1958) and 'Canons (to the memory of Igor Stravinsky)' of 1971.
