Notes & Reviews:

The duties of the Hamburg music director Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach included the writing of festive cantatas for church consecrations and induction services for new pastors and preachers. Since such works were composed for a set 'occasion,' they were denied general significance and banished into the archives. And so it is that, as also in the comparable case of Telemann and his Kapitnsmusiken, we now find a wealth of most highly valuable music still waiting to be discovered - and the C. P. E. Bach expert Ludger Rmy leads the way for us. He characterizes what he has found as follows: "We are surprised at the depth of many a chorus, of many an aria, but also at the charm emanating from them: the music not only flows pleasantly along but also is appealing, bouncy, and surprises us again and again."
