Notes & Reviews:

These are the world-premiere recordings of orchestral works by three of the most acclaimed contemporary American composers. Augusta Read Thomas (b. 1964) incorporates the poems of Emily Dickinson in intensely personal, intellectual introspective motifs, and "offer a meditation on life, death, and poetic creation" states Thomas. Druckman's describes Summer Lightning as "perhaps [the] most brazen step my music has taken in recent works toward simplicity and candor shedding veils of complexity and sophistication, moving inexorably toward a blinding light of simple truth," Druckman's ability to harness emotion and release it tenfold is a testament to the capabilities of contemporary composers. Stephen Hartke's Symphony No. 3 tells the story of the ruins of a Roman city (perhaps Bath), contrasting decay with imaginings of the splendor that once was. The piece is cast in a single movement, but is clearly divided into four main sections; the slower sections treat the descriptions of the ruined city, while the allegros are "evocations of the greatness of the city at its height." -Druckman
