Notes & Reviews:

For centuries in Europe, a Church edict stated that purely instrumental music was mostly secular. At the beginning of the 17th century these barriers were lifted, giving way to the first publications of sonatas and canzonis. The ensemble Il Dolcimelo, which is named for the only extant work by 16th century composer Aurelio Virgilano; which can mean "the sweet melody", was formed in Cologne in 1994. These three young musicians specialize in the music from the 17th and 18th centuries, and are very active on the Early Music circuits through Europe. This is their first CD.
