Notes & Reviews:
Deh, vieni all finestra, o mio tesoro! - Oh, do come to the window, my sweetheart Tender are the seducer's words, just as tender as the tones of his instrument. It is no mere coincidence that during his famous canzonetta in Act II of Mozart's dramma giocoso the lady killer Don Giovanni whispers his yearnings to the strings of the mandolin: this instrument had long been regarded as an indispensable accessory for declarations of love. For their part, the two virtuosos heard on this recording have let themselves be inspired by the intimacy and poetry of plucked music - not at all without scruples, to present a magnificent homage to the musician who will certainly be the most prominent "birthday boy" of 2006. Is it permissible, so they asked, to honor a master with arrangements for mandolin and guitar even though he did not write a single original work for this instrumental combination? Another master in his field, the pianist and ARD prize-winner Kalle Randalu, quickly scattered such skepticism with his observation that the specific tone color this plucked twosome much more closely approximates the fine tone of the original fortepiano of Mozart's times than does the concert grand piano in use today. Like Randalu, the conductor Matthias Hammerschmidt was also immediately enthused by this new-born Mozart sound. Both advised the duo in matters of program selection and arrangement.028947575603
