Notes & Reviews:

John Ogdon studied at the Royal Manchester College of Music. He made his London deut at the Henry Wood Proms in 1958 playing the Busoni Piano Concerto which created a sensation. His London solo recital in 1958 produced the same response, particularly his incredible technical gifts and imaginative insights. In 1961, he was awarded the Franz Liszt Prize and in 1962 he shared the coveted 1st Prize in the Moscow Tchaikovsky Competition with Vladimir Ashkenazy, launching his international career. In 1973, he suffered a nervous breakdown but by the 1980's had started to play again. He will be remebered for his championship of contemporary composers and his monumental interpretations of Bartok, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Scriabin and Shostakovich. This mighty performance of Brahm's Piano Concerto No. 2 sympathetically accompanied by Sir John Barbirolli from Manchester in 1966. The Brahms was sourced from the Barbirolli society while the rare Beethoven Piano Sonata Op.111 from 1963 is from the BBC archives showing Ogdon at the height of his powers, a year after winning the Tchaikovsky Competition.
