Notes & Reviews:

This release of Prokofiev Symphony No.5 completes the three BBC stereo broadcasts made from the Proms in 971 which featured Tchaikovsky Symphony No.4 (BBC CD 4143) and the Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique (BBC CD 4163). The coupling of Britten's Variations on a Theme & Fugue by Purcell comes from the Usher Hall (Edinburgh Festival) in 1960 and is a very rare new addition to the discography of the Leningrad PO. It also follows the theme of the other two discs by combining the 1971 and 1960 appearances on one CD. There is a short encore which Rozhdestvensky introduces from the stage; one of the most virtuoso performances of Prokofiev's Death of Tybalt from Romeo & Juliet anyone is likely to hear.
