Notes & Reviews:

Ernst Levy (1895-1981), a Swiss-born composer who developed a reputation as a musical prodigy and came to the United States before the Second World War with his wife and two sons. He began a distinguished teaching career at MIT, the New England Conservatory and the University of Chicago, while maintaining a schedule as a virtuoso pianist whose records now have a cult following. Sonata Strophica and Sonata for Ten are late works; Experiments in a new style of "symphonic concept" for a small ensemble of solo instruments. These works are full of grandiose ideas, executed in a chamber style. Considered a modern-day counterpart to American legends Aaron Copland and Paul Bowle, these pieces, with their shifting moods and colors are designed to be very engaging and enthralling.
