Notes & Reviews:

The Strauss Sonata has been described by Michael Kennedy as "the last of his classically designed works and his last piece of orthodox chamber music." Composed on the heels of his tone poem Macbeth and while he was sketching Don Juan, the sweeping lines heard in the final movement of the Sonata anticipate the latter tone poem. The Rachmaninov Cello Sonata shares a strong melodic and harmonic kinship with his Piano Concerto No. 2, especially in the respective slow movements. Yuri Zhislin, born in 1974, studied the violin at the Moscow Gnessin Music School and later at the Royal College of Music in London. A major prizewinner of various international competitions, he is an Artistic Director of the Evaristo Valle International Music Festival in Spain and Professor of violin at the Royal College of Music.
