Notes & Reviews:

Following the critically acclaimed Beethoven recordings and the completion of its Mozart cycle, the Hagen Quartett make a welcome return to 20th-century repertoire with this selection of String Quartets by Dmitri Shostakovich. The Hagen quartet is made up of three members of one Salzburg family - Lukas, Veronika and Clemens Hagen - and the German violinist Rainer Schmidt, who joined the quartet in autumn 1987. The Hagens take on Shostakovich's challenging compositions with an irresistible feel for balance, structure, and dramatic development. "Probing musicianship that leaves no musical stone unturned." -Gramophone Magazine
