Album Remarks & Appraisals:
In Persian music, the musician improves by moving freely across different modes (dastgah) and melodic types (gusheh), using pre-existing melodies and rhythms, which may be either simple or complex. This is improvisation on a firm basis of established musical tradition. The musician stays within the known world of Persian music, which has an existence quite apart from the musician. Mania is the state of ecstasy, of madness, that an artist needs to get closer to the ineffable, the invisible Other. Freedom from what is known and what is remembered - this is what is needed if an artist is to recreate the now. Brothers Kiya and Ziya Tabassian have been working together for some fifteen years. They are known for their virtuosity and for a musical language entirely their own, based on classical Persian music. The music of the Tabassians is inspired by medieval as well as contemporary Mediterranean and European music. -Atma Classique
