Though many of these sides are not only technically rockabilly, but also form the foundations of rock & roll as it was known for much of the 20th century, they began as R&B songs performed by black artists like Big Mama Thornton, Arthur Crudup, and Lloyd Price, hence this collection's title. Elvis Presley's fertile early 1950s period is well-represented by cuts like "Good Rockin' Tonight," "My Baby Left Me," and "That's All Right," while the music's unmistakable R&B roots surface on late-'60s tracks like "Big Boss Man" and "Pledging My Love."
