Notes & Reviews:
First staged at the New Court Theatre in Munich on January 29, 1781, 'Idomeneo' is a major statement in Mozart's operatic output. During the 1950's when Mozart's Italian operas were being revived, the work was staged at the historic Glyndebourne Festival conducted by Fritz Busch. Its first recording was by John Pritchard in 1956. Nearly ten years later came this wonderful studio performance. Thanks to a singing cast thoroughly in tune with the score, Maag offers us an extraordinarily vital, persuasive reading, magnificent in its dramatic intensity.
