Apart from a few works with orchestra, Tormis has composed almost exclusively for a cappella voices, either for mixed, men's, women's, or children's choruses. Under the influence of Carl Orff and Zoltan Kodaly, he explored the roots of his Estonian culture cultivating a unique style which incorporated folk materials and stories into his music. Tormis's interest in kindred peoples and their environments has led to a series of works that celebrate the Livonian, Votic, Izhorian, Ingrian, Vepsian, and Karelian folk heritages. The works on this disc help keep alive these almost forgotten cultures. Renowned internationally for their unique musicianship and daring repertoire, the Canadian a cappella group Musica Intima is made up of 12 professional singers who rehearse and perform without a conductor.
