Notes & Reviews:

The first of Shostakovich's 'Sting Quartets' was written when he was 32, with five large 'Symphonies' and two operas already behind him. Despite the audacious and frankly experimental nature of several of these works, the 'Quartet No. 1' is thoroughly in the traditional quartet main stream. With its spring-like innocence and neo-classicism Shostakovich was probably pulling the wool over his critics' eyes rather than towing the line. But it was with the other two 'Quartets' on this CD that Shostakovich's true feelings came out: written during and shortly after World War II, they reflect solidarity with the suffering of the Russian people during "The Great War in Defense of the Fatherland" and under the iron rule of Stalin, as well as his own persecution at the hands of the government and critics towards the "formalism" and "antidemocratic tendencies" in his music.
