Notes & Reviews:

Whether all three of the pieces known under the title 'Water Music' were really composed for open-air concerts is not known for certain. But there is no documentation about a "concert on the river" which took place on July 17, 1717. It was to celebrate the (reluctant) move King George I made from his homeland to the strange city of London. The creation of the 'Royal Fireworks' music we also owe to a royal feast. In 1748 the Austrian war of succession was ended by the Peace of Aachen. A demand for military music to match the pomp of the celebration prompted the (also reluctant) Handel to score the work for 9 trumpets, 9 horns, 24 oboes, 12 bassoons and three kettledrums. Handel's magnificent score survives today in various versions both authentic and dressed-up for modern orchestras.
