Notes & Reviews:
Since its foundation in 1812 the 'Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde (or Society of the Friends of Music) in Vienna has been both an organizer of concerts as well as a collector - still organized as a private society, as intended by its founders - of everything that documents music. In the archives, library, and collections of the 'Gesellschaft' are preserved, and made accessible to those interested, autographs, manuscripts, printed music, books, printed documents of many different kinds, pictures (in all media) of musical relevance, busts and sculptures, musical souvenir objects and musical instruments. The installation, 'They Sound Again,' featuring selected historical musical instruments from the collections, has been running since 2003. The present CD features recordings from the 2003 concerts. A recording of this nature will be of great interest to musical historians. Detailed information is given on the instruments and their builders, and listeners will certainly recognize the names of the participating musicians.
