Notes & Reviews:

"Of all the Schumann CDs I have reviewed, this collection is the most unusual in terms of repertoire and instrument. An impeccably maintained 1910 Steinway D was used, and the sound alone is worth getting this for. Add to it the sensitive, committed performances, choice of repertoire, and excellent notes, and you have a very impressive release... The early (1833) and late (1854) sets of variations here give a fascinating view of Schumann's compositional genius. The Op. 5 Impromptus on a Theme of Clara Wieck were written in five days on a theme by the then 12- year-old Clara. Weiss plays Schumann's 1850 revision with all of the virtuosity and almost orchestral sonorities it demands. An interesting note is that this same theme is quoted by Clara in her Variations on a Theme of Robert Schumann, Op. 20. The Ghost Variations were Schumann's last completed work and not published until 1941. Conceived and written just before his suicide attempt, it was dedicated to Clara, who withheld it from publication. The nickname of these variations stems from Schumann's delusions about ghosts during this difficult time. This piece was not familiar to me before, and the music is quite lyrical and intimate. I could not ask for a more persuasive performance." -ARG
