Notes & Reviews:
Maria Petrovna Maksakova was born in Astrakhan in southwestern Russia. By the age of ten, with a clear voice and having taught herself music, she was singing in a church choir. She remained with the choir until shortly after the 1918 Revolution. She was then accepted into the city's opera company, singing the role of Olga in 'Eugene Onegin.' The baritone and teacher Maximilian Maksakov (whom she would marry) became her vocal advisor. Over the next three decades she would become one of the house's most important singers and also make regular appearances at the opera houses of Leningrad, Odessa and other Russian centers.
