Notes & Reviews:
Schubert's 'Die Winterreise' was completed just a year before the young composer's death. The 24 songs in the cycle form a narrative tale describing the journey through a winter landscape by a man whose love affair has ended unhappily. When he wrote the work, Schubert, who composed more than 600 songs in his brief career, was considered to be at the peak of his creative power. This is the first solo recording from renowned German lyric soprano Christine Schafer in over five years. Gramophone wrote: "Schafer must now be rated in the royal line of Schwarzkopf, Seefried, Ameling, Popp and most recently Bonney."
