Notes & Reviews:

James Cadwell has had a unique career spanning the last fifty years. While a student at the Curtis Institute of Music he toured with the Philadelphia Orchestra to play assistant to his teacher John de Lancie. Within the first weeks of his tenure there, de Lancie fell ill so at the age of 21, Caldwell was performing as first oboe in the Philadelphia Orchestra. He then went on to join and record with the Soni Ventorum Wind Quintet, Chicago Little Symphony, Puerto Rico Symphony and the Casals Festival. He also participated in the Marlboro Festival for five years. For over thirty years he has been a teacher at the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music and his students are in orchestras and teaching positions all over the world. It is noted that he is passionate about passing on the styles, traditions and standards of the Philadelphia School started by Marcel Tabuteau in the early 20th century, which is very apparent in this record. Among his own mentors and influences was the late oboist Wayne Rapier, to whom this CD is dedicated.
