Notes & Reviews:

Flutist Nina Assimakopoulos is a visionary artist whose creative output includes over 40 international theme -based new music commissions and world premieres. Active as a concert soloist, recording artist and abstract and representational painter, she is a Professor of Flute at Bowling Green State University's College of Musical Arts. Assimakopoulos has been critically acclaimed in the last five years by such magazines as 'American Record Guide', 'New York Concert Review,' 'Flute Talk Magazine' as well as by fellow musicians such as Luba Edlina, pianist from The Borodin Trio. This first volume in a series us the first CD emerging from the Laurels Project conceived and produced by Ms. Assimakopoulos, an undertaking that supports the commissioning, promotion and international dissemination of flute literature by American women composers. More broadly, it explores and celebrates the rich panorama of aesthetic styles and compositional diversity present in 21st century America. While this volume showcases four strong pre-existing pieces by Ran, Tower, Shaffer and Folio, 11 of the composers took up the challenge of crafting brand new works "based on literature, for solo flute and under five minutes in length." For several of the works, Ms. Assimakopoulos has chosen to record flute literature, but enables listeners to hear new works by some of this country's veteran composers.
