Notes & Reviews:

"The Parkanyi Quartet contains three members of the old Orlando Quartet, including its leader and first violinist, Istvan Parkanyi. These recordings were made in June and November 2005 in Deventer, the Netherlands, in the Doopsgezinde Church, which offered the group a large, resonant acoustic clearly suitable for both SACD and standard CD. It is the latter mode that is considered here. The Parkanyi's Bartok bulges with insight, tenderness, power, and superior instrumental playing. There is of course harshness in this music, and the group does not run away from it. Instead they approach these rich scores with restraint and a controlled earthiness; and, good at their art, they avoid the kind of tension that comes from simply grappling with the music. There is sometimes more resonance than is really necessary, but that problem may be resolved in SACD." -ARG
