Notes & Reviews:
Ahlersmeyer's singing career came about only after a delay, as he was 18 when World War I broke out. He was sent to the front in 1914. Returning to civilian life four years later, he became a shopkeeper before beginning vocal studies with the famed heldentenor Karl Fischer-Niemann. Ahlersmeyer launched his career in 1928 in Monchengladbach as Wolfram. He was actually invited in 1930 to the Met by Arthur Bodanzky as a heldenbaritone, where his first role would have been the Flying Dutchman. Rejecting the tempting offer, he accepted an engagement at the Kroll Theatre in Berlin instead, where he was considered "a most valuable discovery."
