Notes & Reviews:
Whenever communities come together, they sing in order to give expression to their joys, their sorrows, their pains and their hopes. The slaves sang Negro spirituals that sustained them in times of dark despair, and the crowds celebrating VE day sang songs of thanksgiving and rejoicing. Football supporters sing exuberant songs to encourage their team, but when tragedy strikes they join together to sing 'Abide with me.' Christian communities have sung from the earliest days of the church. Paul encouraged people in one of his letters to sing "Psalms, hymns and spiritual songs."
