Notes & Reviews:

Gottfried August Homilius, who was rightly considered the most important and most creatively prolific 18th century 'Kreuzkantor' was for more than three quarters of his tenure active mainly at Frauenkirche, Dresden, and he wrote most of his works for that church. Homilius spent his schooldays in Dresden, and then in 1735 went to the Leipzig University to study law. These four cantatas, intended for Advent, Christmas, and New Year's Day are concise, beautifully written (with more than a nod to Bach) and, obviously, functional. With their grand opening choruses, striking orchestral accompaniments and vibrant arias, these works will have great appeal to those who cherish such works as Bach's 'Christmas Oratorio.'
