Notes & Reviews:
In contrast to the standard practice of recording symphonic cycles with a single orchestra, Mariss Jansons set out to record these symphonic cornerstones of 20th century repertoire with several orchestras with whom he has enjoyed close relationship over the years. The result is a series of ten CDs featuring the Symphonie-Orchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Wiener Philharmoniker, Berliner Philharmoniker, London Philharmonic, Oslo Philharmonic, St. Petersburg (Leningrad) Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Bitter, brooding, and sarcastic - yet always deeply moving - Dmitri Shostakovich's 15 symphonies reflect more vividly than almost any other 20th century creations the blood and brutality of perhaps the most violent period in human history.
