Notes & Reviews:

"Before legendary flutist Georges Barrere (1876- 1944) arrived in the United States to play in Walter Damrosch's New York Symphony in the early 20th Century, he was deeply involved in the fecund Paris music world. His astonishing early career included nearly 100 premieres of solo, chamber, and orchestral works, often by such luminaries as Debussy and Gaubert. According to Nancy Toff's thoughtful program notes, this recording presents works from an eight-year period, 1987-1905, representing a broad range of styles and personalities. Every serious flutist should explore this for the playing and repertoire. Simply put, this is what the flute should sound like. Leone Buyse has long been one of my idols. I had a summer of lessons with her when I was probably too young to know the true magnitude of what I was learning, but fortunately osmosis somehow prevailed, as several of her basic ideas about tone and phrasing are now an integral part of my playing and teaching. Listening to this recording, I am once again in awe of her flawless technique, radiant and varied tone colors, and effortless musicianship. Nonflutists will also enjoy the elegance and lyrical beauty of this music. It is easy to lose track of time as you enjoy this transcendental experience. A must buy." -ARG
