Notes & Reviews:
"The orchestral works on this Naxos "American Classics" anthology are more persuasive, perhaps because they're shorter and easier to assimilate as wholes. Included are Blades of Grass, from 1945, a lovely 8-minute elegy for English horn, harp, and strings; two ballets, Prospice, from 1948, and Pygmalion, from 1956; two tone-poems, Portrait of Galatea, from 1952, and The Acadian Land, from 1960; and Mediation and Elegy, written in 2000 for string orchestra though based on much earlier piano pieces. All of these compositions were inspired by poetic or mythological sources. They are often slow and meditative, or pastoral and expansive, and their melodic ideas rather generalized, their forms diffuse, their individual profile not sharply etched. Nevertheless the music is lush, sonorous, evocative, and pleasing, indeed exhibiting "noble sincerity" with moments of "grandeur and drama". My appreciative response to Cascarino is most certainly due in part to the fine playing by the Philadelphia Philharmonic under JoAnn Falletta, and to Naxos's vivid, lifelike sonics." -ARG
