Notes & Reviews:

Johann Adolf Hasse was born into a North German family of Protestant church musicians. He started his career as a singer in Hamburg and Brauschweig before he devoted himself to composing, traveling to Italy to become one of the last pupils of Alessandro Scarlatti. In the summer of 1730 Hasse converted to Catholicism and married the famed singer Faustina Bordoni, and the two became among the most prominent artistic couples of their time. The most important and longest period of his life was Hasse's term of office as director of music at the Dresden Court, and for three decades he had a formative influence on the musical life of that city. Although vocal music was a focus of his creative life, he did write much instrumental music. The works on this disc include five of six 'sonatas' first printed in 1744 written in the "galante" style, simplifying counterpoint and emphasizing a solo leading voice with a more transparent accompaniment.
