Notes & Reviews:

Maurice Hewitt was born in Asnieres on October 6, 1884 and died in Paris on November 7, 1971. A violin student at the Paris Conservatory, he was already an active member, in his early twenties, with the Tourret Quartet, the Sailler Quartet and the Dorson Quartet. But his most notable role was as second violin with the famed Capet Quartet, whom he played from 1909 to 1914 and then from 1918 until Capet's death in 1928. As a recording artist, his work with the Capet Quartet has recently been documented. With his own Orchestra, he recorded the works of Mozart, Couperin, Lully, Handel, Beethoven, Schubert, and Leclair - among many others. Hewitt was also a member of the underground Resistance during the war - leading to his arrest in 1943 and deportation to Buchenwald for more than fifteen months. This historic reissue features the music of one of Hewitt's specialties, Jean-Philippe Rameau. 'Les Indes Galantes' is significant because it was the last release by Les Discophiles Francais until after the war.
