Notes & Reviews:
"Just last year (May/June) we reviewed a CPO release of Antheil's piano music, which contained another performance of the concerto as well as the original piano version of the 'Can- Can' movement of the orchestral suite Dreams. The performances here are more staid. Antheil was a chameleon, a showman, and sometimes a comedian; the Philadelphia Virtuosi take him at face value and give him the kind of earnest reading he yearned for. The program gives a fairly broad picture of Antheil's multiple compositional personas. Dreams is a novelty piece whose movements include 'Rat', 'Polka', and 'Acrobat'; it gets a deadpan performance that suits its dreamier moments, though a touch of slapstick here and there would help. The other two pieces show Antheil's serious side: the concerto is soaked in Stravinskian neoclassicism, and the Serenade has a thick French accent. Both have a three movement fast-slow-fast structure, and while they're not masterpieces, they come off well in Spalding's hands." -ARG
