Notes & Reviews:

Long before the coming of Christianity, the Winter Solstice was celebrated by the Celts with fire rituals symbolizing the coming of light and hope in the season of darkness. In the cold evening in Scotland, Wales, Ireland, and the Isle of Man, the ancients gathered around peat fires to speed the passage of the dark with songs, tales, drinking and laughter. By the 9th century, the marriage of Christian mysticism and Celtic artistic tradition had produced the glowing, intricate illuminations of the 'Book of Kells.' Although there is no comparable musical monument to that spectacular merging of faith and culture, most of the pieces on this CD evoke a similar sense of wonder. The instrumentation used on this disc combines the sonorities of ancient instruments with those of instruments usually associated with Celtic music (harp, traditional violin, bagpipes, and nickel harp).
