Notes & Reviews:

"Not the sexiest title ever devised, but do not let that put you off - this is a disc full of rare goodies. Adrian Chandler explains how the works chosen here show the concerto edging from ensemble music without soloist to the more recognisably polarised models of Vivaldi's L'estro armonico. Thus at one end we have Legrenzi's dance movements for five-part strings and Francesco Navara's similarly scored sinfonias, and at the other a nascent solo violin concerto from Albinoni, a concerto for four violins by Giuseppe Valentini and a pair of those well known Vivaldi works. These mostly unfamiliar pieces make highly enjoyable listening, especially when played with the natural exuberance that La Serenissima bring to them. Legrenzi's dances are catchy, Navara's fleshed-out trio sonatas show off their lively violinistic style to advantage, and the Albinoni stands revealed as a neatly crafted miniature. Most interesting of all is the Valentini concerto, a rich and expansive 17-minute work full of strength and invention, including a bold five-minute fugue. Even the Vivaldi works acquire a fresh energy, if at a slight cost in textural transparency. I am not sure what the anonymous pre-Vivaldian setting of Laudate pueri Dominum has to do with all this, but since it offers a chance to experience the bright brilliance of soprano Mhairi Lawson it would be churlish to complain. And indeed, if you put the music history lesson aside for a moment there is nothing to be had here but pleasure. Roll on the instructive Vol 2!" -Gramophone

Rousing exuberance and a history lesson no one would mind taking ... there is nothing to be had here but pleasure. Roll on the instructive Vol 2.
