Notes & Reviews:

"Few pianists are more true to their extraordinary lights than Olli Mustonen. For some his beady-eyed virtuosity in Rachmaninov's teeming all-Russian romanticism will seem flinty and remorseless, inviting controversy at every point. Indeed, it is easy to imagine the Russian musical establishment listening to this performance awed but piqued by such a daringly individual slant or take on their music. Nothing is opulently phrased and pedalled in a more familiar style and yet Mustonen creates a savage case for an unduly neglected sonata. The manner is tight and breathless but his super-human agility allows him a freedom unknown to lesser pianists. More acutely and intricately voiced than any other version, he creates a searing emotional turbulence, whirling us through the vortex of the first movement development with heart-stopping brilliance and making the chains of ecstatic trills concluding the central Lento flash like so many shooting stars. Mustonen is no less remarkable in Tchaikovsky's Seasons, scorning their gentler, more domestic virtues. August is allegro vivace with a vengeance, every cross-rhythm caught and underlined with razor-sharp aplomb, while December, normally a gently alluring waltz, is made elfin, piquant and scintillating at each of its many turns. In an age of conformity Mustonen is nothing if not individual and while I can never forgive Warner Classics for their deletion of Boris Berezovsky's prize-winning disc of the Rachmaninov Sonata (7/94), Mustonen provides a mesmeric alternative. We need to hear much more of this ear- and mind-catching pianist; in the complete Rachmaninov concertos, for example." -Gramophone
