Notes & Reviews:

Today violists the world over think of Lionel Tertis as the man who brought the hitherto humble viola into the limelight and made it into a solo instrument. He created a repertoire for it by either transcribing earlier works, or bullying his contemporaries into writing new works for him. As a recording artist, his greatest decade was the 1920's, and the highly-acclaimed earlier release in this series, 'The Complete Columbia Recordings' (B80216) is now joined by this illuminating volume derived from the Vocalion label. All of these selections, in contrast to the electrically-recorded Columbia discs, were done by the old acoustic process, with Tertis and his fellow musicians playing into a large recording "horn" which transmitted the sound to the disc cutter. Although the later Columbia 78s were re-recordings of some of the present material, the Vocalion set includes some unusual material: in particular, the mesmerizing performance of John Ireland's 'The Holy Boy,' and the 'Romance' from the suite written for Tertis by Benjamin Dale.
